Montenegro Earn Historic Win // 07.07.2007

Montenegro earned a historic first win in official European Competition when they defeated Germany 74-72 in their opening game of the U20 European Championships Men Division B in Warsaw.

Vladimir Dasic led his team to victory with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Dasic, an athletic forward, already highly touted amongst Europe's top clubs and his ability to run the floor with his 2.06m frame, made the difference at crucial parts of the game.

Goran Martinic controlled the tempo for the Montenegrins adding 14 points and 8 assists.

Per Gunter and Sajmen Hauer scored 13 points each for Germany, who struggled to find their form early on in the game.

After the break Montenegro continued with an up tempo game, but the Germans kept it close until the last few minutes.

Chasing the game the Germans elected to foul and it looked as though this tactic would work to their advantage, but the Montenegrins held their nerve and made their free throws to take the game amid scenes of jubilation for their first win in European competition.

The Germans, who were relegated from Division A last summer, must now beat the Czechs on Saturday who will also be looking for their first win having gone down to an under-strength Swedish side 62-45.

Poland opened their account in front of the home fans with an emphatic 86-48 win over Switzerland, and seem early runners to be one of the qualified teams from their group for the next phase.
