France Ride Mbaye To Victory // 10 August 2008

The game for the seventh place doesn't draw a lot of attention usually, but France's 96-78 win over Ukraine won't be forgotten soon by those who attended.

The bottom line is that France won the seventh place while Ukraine is ranked eighth at the end of the championship.

If you look a few lines above the bottom you could see that France's guard Abdoulaye Mbaye set a new tournament high by scoring 45 points, while printing his name in the record books.

Mbaye tied the three pointers made record in a youth tournament by connecting on 11 of those, seven of them in the last quarter.

The old record was set on the first day of the competition by Mbaye's opponent today - Ukraine's Sergiy Gladyr.

Kim Tillie followed him with 17 points and nine rebounds and Antoine Diot added 16 points, eight assists and six rebounds.

Sergiy Gladyr scored 15 for Ukraine, Vadym Norenko added 14, Sergiy Popov added 12 and Oleksandr Sizov contributed 10.

Mbaye was out of the oven hot already in the first quarter when he connected 11 points, two rebounds, two assists and a single steal as France took a 25-17 first quarter lead.

He added six more points until the break, and along with Tillie who enjoyed a good first half as well as he collected 12 points and five rebounds, France stayed on top.

Ukraine answered with Gladyr and Sizov to stay close and finish the half down by only five, 44-39.

Ukraine kept chasing and every time France took off, they found the way to get closer again.

With 5:28 to go Popov made it just 71-68 but then Mbaye woke up.

Up until that point he had "only" 25 points, but until the buzzer he added 20 more including five three pointers.
